After the Symington family’s acquisition of Graham’s in 1970, the then head of winemaking, Peter Symington, selected the 1972 as his first single harvest for
ageing in seasoned oak casks. Accompanying the maturation of this single harvest Port throughout his career, he passed it on to his son when he retired in 2009. The traditional ageing of Graham’s Tawny Port has historically taken place in the Graham’s 1890 Lodge in Vila Nova de Gaia. Just 3 kilometres from the
coast, the maritime climate provides perfect conditions for the maturation of Graham’s Ports.
Charles Symington, current head winemaker, tasted each of the casks handed down to him by his father and selected nine for bottling. Each containing 712 bottles, this individually numbered limited release of 1972 Port is testament to the knowledge and experience passed down from father to son.
“One of the first wines I put aside for the future was a small parcel of wine from the 1972 vintage, made from two very special properties – Quinta dos Malvedos and Quinta das Lages. I selected this wine from the very oldest vines, then over 80 years old. I watched this wine age in the cool Graham’s
cellars and I then handed it over to someone who has already shown that he is capable of further bettering the family traditions.”
Peter Symington, Graham’s Head Winemaker 1970-2009
“A beautiful golden colour, with an intense ripe aroma of dried fruits and orange peel combined with cherry fruit and toasted aromas from more than 40
years of wood ageing, create tremendous complexity in this many layered wine. The flavour fills the whole palate with huge volume and power developing into an exceptionally long, fresh and honey-sweet finish.”
